Why logistics needs shared standards

The open approach of the Open Logistics Foundation is changing the traditional perspective of companies on digitalisation in logistics. Together, we create more robust, creative, and sustainable solutions.

Change starts with open source
With unified solutions and interfaces – and with experts like you

Although logistics is highly standardised, companies today still develop software for the same logistics process in parallel, maintain it separately, run updates, and fix bugs. At the Open Logistics Foundation, by contrast, they solve the problems together – and develop one software for everyone.

In doing so, they are committed to a vision that goes beyond their own company and strengthens logistics as a whole. We offer them a protected space and structures in which even competitors can operate in compliance with the law, as well as support with the organisation and management of their projects.

For innovators

Achieve more with open collaboration

Those who open us their development processes and collaborate across company boundaries create solutions that go further – for everyone.

Pooling of resources

Through collaborative development, companies avoid duplicated effort and reduce costs. This saves time and enables employees to focus on value-adding services.

Establishment of standards

Open source solutions created by logistics industry stakeholders set standards and shape the market. Those who co-develop solutions determine the direction.

Building of networks

Open exchange with other companies creates valuable partnerships. Future topics can be identified at an early stage and actively shaped.

Strengthening of innovative power

The knowledge of the masses accelerates the development of new technologies. Active involvement secures a leading market position.

Alexander Schaefer

CIO, EDITEL

»EDITEL, as the digital bridge builder in the supply chain, joined the Foundation because we are convinced that interoperability and standards is key to success, not only but especially in logistics. EDITEL aims to contribute to the common Foundation goal to drive digitalization and innovation in the logistics industry.«

Serge Schamschula

Head of Ecosystem, Transporeon

»In logistics, there are too many isolated solutions on the one hand, and on the other, high barriers to data sharing. As a result, the benefits of digital solutions are only accessible to a few – and even then, not to the full extent. In this sense, large platforms and their users also benefit when shared standards help software solutions reach a wider audience.«

For adopters

Benefit from what’s proven

The Open Logistics Repository of the Open Logistics Foundation provides both industry-ready software for widespread logistics processes and services, as well as components with a highly specific focus, available for download. These open source solutions were specifically developed to be industry suitable and can be used freely. As a result, companies are no longer reliant on proprietary software and contribute to promoting the standards developed within the Foundation. At the same time, they are encouraged to return updates and further developments to the open source community and feed them back into the repository.

“WHY” IN 90 SECONDS

“Logistics has always been about common standards”

Andreas Nettsträter, CEO of the Open Logistics Foundation, explains in this video why open source is the key to successful digitalisation in logistics – and what contribution the Open Logistics Foundation makes to this.

We develop standards – for standards

At the Open Logistics Foundation, we deal with the development of software for so-called commodities in logistics. Such non-market-differentiating services do not represent a unique selling point, nor can companies earn money with them – much like the light that goes on when you open a fridge: it’s expected, not exceptional, and does not offer a competitive advantage or trigger a buying impulse in the customer. However, their existence is taken for granted.

These are our topics for the logistics of tomorrow

The Open Logistics Foundation drives forward topics from logistics and supply chain management that are highly relevant for the entire sector, but also for each individual company. Our members develop the topics collaboratively and continue working on them in Working Groups or Projects, supported and guided by the open source experts from the Foundation’s Head Office.
