Initiative for a Global Open Source Community in Air Cargo launched

What shared challenges should the air cargo industry address collaboratively? Where can efficiency and interoperability be enhanced through open source solutions? These were key questions explored at the Air Cargo Roundtable, organized by Open Logistics Foundation and International Air Transport Association (IATA) in May.

The event brought together dedicated air cargo experts to define interfaces and cross-functionalities – such as ONE Record, Track & Trace, Decarbonisation, and Time Slot Management – that could benefit from industry-wide open source solutions. “This event was perfect for anyone passionate about the world of air cargo logistics,” says Carina Tüllmann, COO of the Open Logistics Foundation. More than 40 representatives from companies and organisations took the opportunity to engage with like-minded peers and exchange ideas.

Building a Global Digital Cargo Open Source Community is the logical next step for the Open Logistics Foundation following the work of the Digital Air Cargo Working Group and its NE:ONE project. The Foundation already promoted this initiative at the World Cargo Symposium in Dubai. In their presentation titled “Global Open Source Community for Digital Freight,” they highlighted the importance of global collaboration in digital cargo and illustrated how such a community can significantly enhance efficiency and cooperation across the industry. “Air cargo is on the path to digitalisation, but there are still major gaps,” says Tüllmann. “With our initiative, we aim to close these gaps – or at least reduce them significantly. We hope many companies will reach out to us – both major players and smaller actors. Collaborative development becomes more effective the more roles and perspectives are involved.”

In February, the Open Logistics Foundation participated as a partner in the IATA ONE Record Hackathon for the first time. In collaboration with the IATA, the Foundation promoted the ONE Record standard for open data exchange in global air freight logistics.
