In an era where efficiency, transparency and accuracy are crucial, the Working Group Digital Air Cargo is dedicated to transforming the air cargo industry. Their mission is to streamline data exchange across the entire air cargo transport chain, making it more efficient, reliable, and interoperable. At the heart of this transformation is the NE:ONE project, an open source software package designed to implement the data model and API specifications of the IATA ONE Record standard. With NE:ONE, air cargo stakeholders can achieve a fully digital, error-free data exchange that maintains high data quality to serve as a unified standard recognised across the industry.

“2025 marks our final stretch toward the January 1st, 2026 deadline for ONE Record implementation—let’s make it count. With NE:ONE simplifying the transition and DTAC development reigniting, this is our last, best chance to bring our vision to life, elevate standards, and lead the industry into an era of seamless digital collaboration,”

highlights Oliver Ditz, Research Associate at Fraunhofer IML.

Key milestones achieved in 2024

Over the past year, the Working Group has made significant strides toward realising its vision of seamless data exchange:

  • NE:ONE v1.3 release: Introduction of the latest updates and features to enhance performance and compliance with the IATA ONE Record standard.
  • Active implementations: NE:ONE is already operational, with companies like Lufthansa and DB Schenker leveraging its capabilities for real-world data exchange.
  • Collaborative development: Ongoing collaboration among key industry players, including DACHSER, DB Schenker, Fraunhofer IML (lead), logistics cloud, and Rhenus Logistics, ensures the solution meets diverse operational needs.

Looking ahead: 2025 and beyond

The Working Group is focused on several upcoming key initiatives:

  • Standard refinement: Working closely with IATA to fine-tune the NE:ONE standard, ensuring robustness and adaptability.
  • Testing One Record use cases at IATA Hackathon: Demonstrating NE:ONE’s capabilities in real-world scenarios at the upcoming IATA Hackathon in Dublin. We expect valuable insights from participants.
  • Joint IATA discussion table with air freight carriers at World Cargo Symposium 2025 in April in Dublin.

“The year 2025 is crucial for me when it comes to the introduction and implementation of ONE Record in air freight. With the NE:ONE open source project, we established an easy entry into ONE Record for everyone. Now it’s about creating an active user and developer community for the mutual benefit of all.”
